AV monitoring software has come a long way in the last few years. Originally, there were two main platforms, at least as far as I was aware: Crestron’s Fusion and AMX RMS. These typically on-premises servers required a system controller in each room, with extra programming in place to report back to the server via a kind of “gateway.” The implementation of these systems was very much bespoke, and the information displayed could be quite limited, again due to the implementation.

This is in stark contrast to the current day, where it seems most manufacturers have their own cloud-based solutions, giving us more information and sometimes even the ability to change settings, update configurations, or even push software and firmware updates. As a service technician, this change in approach was bittersweet. On the positive side, it gave me easier access to devices and their statuses, enabling a faster response to issues. Some of these services even have a free tier, making the conversation to adopt them easier, along with managing system updates being easier and less resource-intensive. However, the downside I see is the now vast amount of dashboards and services that need to be monitored, along with some products like LCDs and projectors not having a service or the ability to incorporate with proprietary systems. At best, you can check and update the device over the network, or alternatively, physically check the device, though I also find inspecting rooms each morning a worthwhile practice.

So, what to do then? Some progress has been made with companies developing services that bring at least the monitoring service to a central location, whether through direct connection to the device or via third-party monitoring platforms. We have some manufacturers incorporating third-party devices into their systems. These are steps in the right direction, though they are only possible through partnerships or when APIs are available and can be used to access the data. The latter of the two requirements would still likely remove the ability to update software and firmware, and possibly settings.

What is the ideal situation? Ideally, we are in a world where there is a standard set of APIs or protocols (similar to CEC) that we could use to enhance the ability of these monitoring platforms. With most devices able to request updates from servers, either internal or public, a standard set of metrics and/or controls could speed up and possibly enhance third-party device monitoring. You might say this could possibly kill the market for these monitoring services, but I would counter with a look at the IT & Networking space. There are a sea of options powered by somewhat standardized commands and protocols. I would also mention that if the desire is to enable users and businesses to get the most out of their technology, then standardizing the monitoring could not just help but enhance this ability. I also don’t believe I have the answers or solutions. I think we should always look to enhance usability in an industry many people don’t understand, not confuse it more with a sea of dashboards, emails, and notifications.
